Iran Announces Plan To Launch Domestic Internet By March 2013 (And To Block Google Today)

It seems that the Iranian government is working to take even tighter control of the country’s already heavily-censored version of the Internet.

The government said that it’s going to launch its own domestic Internet, and that the system will be fully operational by March 2013, according to Reuters and others (who, in turn, seem to be basing their reports on the Iranian media). It’s not clear whether all access to sites outside of Iran will be blocked once the domestic system is live.

The Gmail Redesign

A ton of people I know seem to be bitching about this (as it was just forced upon everyone). IMO, the new design is better than the old one (just look as Jason Crawford’s side-by-sides at the end), but change is hard and all that.

The reality is that both designs pretty much blow. Gmail itself has become a big nightmare. As a backend for email, it’s awesome. As a web app, it’s awful.

What Google’s Vic Gundotra didn’t talk about when he announced the changes this morning was the fact that Google has now also switched to a responsive web design for Google . Instead of a traditional fixed-width design, responsive design adapts to the size of your browser window.

In November 2006, Google bought the video sharing powerhouse YouTube for an “astronomical” $1.65 billion. The first video was uploaded to YouTube on April 23rd, 2005. It quickly became the default site on the web to upload video clips of just about anything; dogs, cats, babies, and yes, some copyrighted stuff. You couldn’t discuss video on the web without mentioning YouTube. Does this story sound familiar at all? It sounds like what just happened with Instagram and Facebook, of course.
